Expectations–a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future. I want you guys to reflect on that definition for a minute. Will it be smart for you to have expectations for yourself or others? I know I don’t have to sit here and explain to you guys that it’s not smart to have expectations for others because I’m 100% sure we’ve all been disappointed by someone. We naturally create our own heartbreaks by having high expectations for others. The smart idea would be to have expectations for yourself. I’m aware you can’t control everything that happens in your life, but you can set expectations for things you want out of life.
How to Set Expectations for Yourself:
-Get clear on your values
-Quiet your fears
-Give yourself opportunities
-Surround yourself around those who hold you to a high standard
When Setting Expectations “with” Others:
*if you absolutely need to set expectations for others*
-Make the expectation known and discuss
-Come to a mutual understanding (actions towards the expectation)
-Agree to the expectation and commit
For as long as I can remember I’ve been setting expectations for myself. I also know it’s limitations to those expectations. When it comes to setting expectations for yourself make sure you’re not:
-trying to be a perfectionist
-being overly critical of yourself
-taking on too much
-expecting to be 100% all the time
As always, I am forever rooting for you. Continue to set expectations and goals for yourself, but don’t just set them make sure you’re putting work into completing the expectations.
